Hummingbird Nectar

I love watching the hummingbirds come to the feeders and drink. Such an amazing, tiny bird. Most times they are so fast you can barely make out what is zooming past you.

I try not to use the red colored hummingbird nectar you can find almost anywhere. Its has added colors which are not beneficial to the birds. Making your own nectar is simple and provides a the birds with the energy they need.

There are only 2 ingredients in this recipe, water & sugar. Both of which I can assume are readily available at home.

Hummingbird Nectar

1 Cup White Sugar

4 Cups Water

1) Measure out sugar.

2) Take a glass or plastic measuring cup and measure out 2 cups of water.

3) Heat the water in the microwave until boiling, mine took about 3:30 minutes.

4) Carefully, with a hot pad holder, remove the boiling water and add it to a large mixing bowl.

5) Dump in the sugar and whisk vigorously until the sugar crystals are all dissolved in the water.

6) Next, measure out an additional 2 cups of water and dump into the sugar water mixture. (You do not heat the 2nd measurement of water)

7) Whisk until combine and let it sit on the counter until cool.

8) Once cooled, fill your hummingbird feeders nice and full.

*Remaining liquid can be stored in the refrigerator for up two 2 weeks.

You can use the chart below to know how long your nectar is good for outside. You should be regularly changing the nectar for the hummingbirds.
